Oundle School is one of the country’s leading HMC co-educational boarding and day schools, and enjoys a strong reputation for academic excellence supported by outstanding pastoral care.
To start September 2018 on a fixed term contract to December 2018, we are seeking an exceptional Teacher of Geography to develop and inspire our pupils, and who is able to participate in and contribute to the life of the School as a whole. The post-holder will be expected to teach 52 periods per fortnight of Geography up to GCSE level, and potentially throughout the School, depending on availability and experience.
Geography is housed at the heart of the academic life of the School in the Cloisters. Currently with seven Geography teachers working collaboratively, it is a popular subject with 150 pupils opting for the subject at IGCSE this year and over 60 pupils studying the subject across the Sixth Form. We study the Cambridge IGCSE and the OCR A-Level, both of which involve a valued coursework component.
Geography is taught as a compulsory subject to all pupils in the First, Second and Third Forms. The Junior years are taught Geographical concepts through place studies. For instance, in the ‘Antarctica and the Arctic’ unit they learn about latitude, climate, biomes, tourism, geopolitics and global warming. There is also a healthy level of extra-curricular Geography activities, with an active Geography Society hosting visiting speakers and a Sixth Form Forum allowing the pupils to experience the subject beyond the confines of the curriculum. A variety of fieldwork is undertaken in support of the taught curriculum over the course of the year, including a residential field trip for the Lower Sixth to the Chiltern Hills involving urban studies on the Isle of Dogs and international trips to Bulgaria, Iceland and Costa Rica planned during 2017-2019.
Geographers at IGCSE attained 89% A*/A and at A-Level they achieved 83% A*/B in Summer 2017.
Oundle is a historic market town in Northamptonshire famous for its beautiful Georgian streets and impressive limestone buildings. The town has a spirited cultural life, with an annual international festival, literature festival, and frequent performances of nationally touring shows at the School’s Stahl theatre. The town has a range of independent shops, coffee houses, pubs and eateries. Encircled by the river Nene, the town is also blessed to be surrounded by beautiful countryside with many picturesque villages nearby.
For those moving into the area, accommodation may be available at a discounted rate. Other benefits include a salary on the generous Oundle pay scale.
