About this event

We'll reflect on the key lessons to be learned from the most recent exam papers and the issues and challenges faced by the AQA A-Level Sociology teacher community this year.

Our aim? To leave delegates feeling much better prepared and more confident in their approach to delivering linear AQA A Level Sociology from September 2017.

Key Lessons Learned & Actions for September

Let’s strike while the iron is hot – what can we learn from the three linear papers and two AS papers? What were the surprises? What common errors arose amongst new and experienced sociologists? These are just a few of the exam factors that will impact on your department’s results in 2018. The session moves on to consider how we can use this information to inform our planning and teaching. We have worked with examiners to produce a range of new student-friendly mark schemes and model answer structures for all major questions which will instill confidence amongst teachers and their students.

Next Time, It’s Linear!

Do you really need AS? As the specification content grows, are there more efficient ways of teaching the two-year course? When should you train your students in the rigours of 10, 20 and 30 mark questions? September 2017 is the ideal time to reconsider everything about your sociology course. Which topics to choose, the order in which they are covered and when to embed both theory and methods are all up for negotiation. We will compare a range of specially prepared linear and synoptic schemes of work. We will also focus on how to streamline the debates surrounding objectivity, science and social policy.

Make it Memorable!

Still teaching the same old studies in the same old ways? It’s time to bring your sociology lessons back to life by turning those dry topics into something more contemporary and relevant to your students. We will show you how to have fun with some of our favourite PowerPoint games as well as active and independent learning strategies which take the pain out of revising Year One in Year Two. We will help you raise your students’ AO2 marks with a synoptics game. We consider how to use talk to inform writing as well as ways to engage learners outside the classroom.
