Could Machiavelli save Gordon Brown?

Jim Riley

9th July 2009

There is a fascinating piece in today’s Guardian by Tim Parks who has just completed a new translation of Machiavelli’s The Prince, relating Brown’s current predicament to the advice given by the renaissance writer.

The Prince has long been on my list of “must-reads” for students applying for politics and related degrees. It is a mainstay of most first year undergraduate political theory courses.

Today’s article is useful for students looking at Brown’s leadership and Prime Ministerial style and is great for those students “aiming higher” who wish to put in context.
