Trump's Tariff Threat - Bad News for US Sneaker Lovers

We will wait to see if the reality comes anywhere close to matching the rhetoric but the footwear industry is an example of a sector where less than 2% of shoes worn in the United States are made in the country.

Today the US imports 98.4% of its footwear, according to the American Apparel and Footwear Association. This is despite an import tariff averaging close to 10 per cent. More here

66% of all US imports of Footwear stems from China - with a 12% import tariff.

China held an estimated 75 per cent share of global footwear exports in 2015, down from 80% in 2010. Cost advantage is moving to countries such as Vietnam, Bangladesh and Indonesia.
