Shut Down Points: The Rise and Fall of Blackberry

It has taken some time, but since 2010 the decline in market share for Blackberry handsets has been nothing short of calamitous. The number of sales has collapsed from over 50 million in 2010 to just 4 million smartphones in 2016. CEO John Chen is calling time as losses mount.

With Joseph Schumpeter smiling from above - Blackberry has announced that it is to end the designing of their handsets. They are pivoting to becoming a software business only and will outsource any remaining manufacturing to other businesses. Android and iOS now account for 99 percent of global smartphone sales, rendering every other platform irrelevant.
