Gig Economy - Poor Working Conditions and Wages
23rd December 2016
How is the labour market being affected by the rise to prominence of the Gig Economy?
This special video from the Financial Times looks at the working conditions of people employed in the Gig Economy. We love apps that are convenient and cheap - but is this true innovation that has sustainable commercial value? And what of the "contractors" employed by businesses such as Uber, Task Rabbit, Deliveroo and many others?
Deliveroo moved from hourly to per drop contracts in the summer of 2016 - a unilateral decision that naturally produced anger among those employed.
Is the Gig Economy accelerating the growth of a new breed of monopsonistic employers where the reality of the job is very different from that prompted as part of the recruitment process? The video provides some compelling evidence that most of the risks involved in taking these jobs are borne by the workers themselves.
