Ethiopia opens Africa's largest industrial park

Geoff Riley

17th July 2016

Here is a great contextual example of how fast-growing countries such as Ethiopia are increasingly taking over the mantle of China in producing textiles and apparel.

Ethiopia has inaugurated the new Hawassa Industrial Park for textile & apparel - a project that has hopes of creating upwards of 50,000 jobs Hawassa Industrial Park is Africa’s largest industrial park in the city of Hawassa 275km southeast of the capital Addis Ababa. The project built by a Chinese company was completed in only 9 months period.

The aims for Ethiopia's industrial parks are ambitious as the country looks to achieve a phase of rapid industrialisation built around light manufacturing. The newly expanded international airport as Addis Ababa is vital for textile and apparel industries to expand and export since Ethiopia is land-locked.
