An Invitation to the 2017 Marshall Society Economics Conference

Geoff Riley

21st November 2016

Tutor2u are pleased to support this event once again held in the beautiful surroundings of the Cambridge Union Building. Here are details of the 2017 Marshall Society conference which promises to be of great interest and value to A Level economists.

Cambridge

The Marshall Society at the University of Cambridge are delighted to invite school students to attend their 2017 annual conference.

The Marshall Society of Economics, established in 1927 and named after Alfred Marshall, aims to promote greater understanding and discussion of its discipline with past members including John Maynard Keynes, Nicholas Kaldor, and Joan Robinson.

We wish to continue this proud intellectual tradition, and also build upon the success of last year's conference, where speakers discussed “The Evolution of Economic Thought”.

This year’s event is centred around the theme of “Crisis Economics” and will be the largest event of the society's calendar year. This is a unique opportunity for students to gain an insight into the origins and effects of financial crises from internationally recognised subject specialists, academics and representatives from industry. It will be directly relevant to A level studies, and offers an opportunity to explore the subject beyond the curriculum, as students prepare to apply for university.

Given the theme of the conference, the confirmed list of speakers encompasses a wide range of fields within economics. Confirmed speakers include:

  • Mark Gregory (EY Chief Economist)
  • David Halpern (Head of the Behavioural Insights Team)
  • Gerard Lyons (co-founder of ‘Economists for Brexit’)
  • Ann Pettifor (Director of PRIME)
  • Torsten Bell (Director of the Resolution Foundation)
  • George Cooper (Author of ‘Fixing Economics’)

We are delighted that Kate Raworth will discuss her fascinating ‘doughnut’ economic model ahead of the publication of her new book.

The conference will be held in the Cambridge Union Building on Saturday 4th February 2017 and is scheduled to begin at 9.30am and finish at 5.30pm, with a lunch provided for all.

Tickets are priced at £15 for students, with a complementary teacher ticket for groups over 10 people.

I hope this is of interest to you. If so, please email conference@marshallsociety.com
