The Wisdom of Margaret Thatcher

For many readers Margaret Thatcher will be a historical figure. She was a remarkable politician! She was a politician that I think I’m right in saying nobody was indifferent about. They loved her or hated her. One of the things that she was good at was providing what we now call sound-bites. Round about 1980 she gave the Country a short lecture on Economics. A Country’s finances , she opined , are like a housewife’s purse. You can’t spend what you haven’t got. Complete tosh of course , the two examples are not compatible , and a number of Economists wrote to the ‘Times’ to say so! But she was good at explaining complex things in simple terms. Recently Mr. Cameron has been explaining that the Country’s credit card is ‘maxed out’. Same sort of thing. It might be nonsense but its put in terms that the intended audience will be able to understand. They are powerful ideological statements!
So , this is the quote that you might like to consider. Shortly after Mrs. Thatcher became PM she gave an interview to ‘Woman’s Own’. She explained that ‘There was no such thing as Society , just individuals and families’. So was she a Sociological ignoramus or a perceptive early post-modernist. And if you can’t decide, and you’re an A level student ask your parents. You might have to explain some technical language , but once you have done , I promise you that they will have a view!
