Rupert Murdoch may hate the BBC, and the reason is obvious.  He hasn’t got a prayer of dominating the internet while this licence-payer funded behemoth continues to expand.  And long may this state of affairs continue.  I cannot see any Murdochian arm producing a news site anything like as comprehensive as the BBC one, and now the good old beeb have added another element to their empire, of great potential to politics teachers.  It’s called Democracy Live, and has only just gone, well, live.

The site is effectively an aggregation of all of the BBC’s extensive British political coverage, along with a number of excellent background link articles.  It is headed up with a range of parliamentary video extracts, and then usefully displays a number of political guides, all designed to make the average net surfer a little more familiar with the British political process.  I don’t think any of their articles are going to provide students with that Eureka moment, but they should all help to consolidate their existing knowledge, and allow them - more importantly - an excellent reference base for constant updating.  On those long afternoons in January when the pile of GCSE mock marking is standing glumly on your desk, it may well be worth booking out the IT suite in the knowledge that the BBC have provided your students with at least a double lesson’s worth of fruitful net activity!
