The Sentencing Council have released stats for Crown Court sentencing from October 2011-March 2012.

Some intersting stats to use with your students on sentencing - for example:

96% of offenders with four or more aggravating factors but no mitigating factors were sent to immediate custody;
Only 12% of offenders with four or more mitigating factors but no aggravating factors were sentenced to immediate custody;
70% of serious offenders were sentenced to immediate custody.

It’s worth a read - some useful data not only to explain how things pan out in practice (and perhaps dispel the odd tabloid myth!) but also to be looked at from the point of view of sentencing theories such as retribution.

The same website also has the Sentencing Guidlines here.

Hat tip to Bystander for this one!
