The £1000 Easter Egg

Following on from my earlier blog it seems that not all Easter eggs will be a bargain this year.

An Easter egg containing a gold coin is on sale in Selfridges for £1000. The store hopes that the egg will be the ultimate alternative investment for chocoholics fed up with the poor return on property and shares over the last year.

The egg contains a Gold Bullion Britannia coin set into its shell. Gold has performed superbly over the last three years, doubling in value to nearly $1000 an ounce, although there has been greater volatility over the last year.

The coin weighs exactly one troy ounce- 10% heavier than a standard ounce and the measurement used by the gold industry. Last week gold was trading at £610 an ounce. This is significantly less than the £1000 price tag but Selfridges insist the coin is rare and one that the Royal Mint no longer produces.

The egg is produced by Melt and is made to order by Melt’s head chocolatier Chika Watanabe. Fancy treating someone?
