I developed this as a starter activity to encourage my business students to keep up-to-date with news stories affecting businesses and consumers.  I had noticed that many students were able to explain business theories but failed to relate them to the real world. To make it easier for the students, a permanent link to the excellent BBC Business News website was embedded into the VLE so there could be no excuses!!

This activity could work just as well for economics, geography, social studies and many other subjects. I have found this starter activity engages the students and often sparks lively discussion.

Starting in September, the Business News Hot Seat runs once a week and is occupied by one member of the class chosen by the teacher. This usually takes 5-10 minutes but can take longer. Personally, I’m happy to take longer if the students are showing enthusiasm for the subject and a healthy debate is being generated…I placed this on the VLE to remind the students (feel free to use if you wish):

Remember to keep up to date with what is happening in the business world because every week someone will be in the

To achieve higher grades students need to show critical thinking, analysis and application of business concepts. Using the Business News Hot Seat helps students to identify, comment on and analyse examples from the real business world which helps them to develop these vital skills. As the students don’t know who’s going to be asked each week it also keeps them on their toes.  I have used this with my HE Business students but it would work equally well with A level, BTEC or GCSE students.
