This is an outstanding idea that was given to me by my good friend Allan Todd who teaches at Mossbourne Academy. Its ideal for subjects that have questions with extended answers such as History, Sociology, Business Studies, English and Geography.

Homework MOT

The idea is so simple, but like most simple things in teaching, extremely effective. The idea involves handing back a piece of homework with just comments on and feedback on how to improve the answer that has been handed in.

When I do it, I keep the overall mark/ grade to myself. The homework is then handed back and the student needs to repair the homework, improving it using the feedback given. The work is then re-assessed and the grades compared.

I’ve done this on numerous occasions and everytime the student has improved their work. Once this is shared with the students they understand the importance of actually reading an acting upon the comments..

I wouldnt do this with every piece of homework but it certainly is worth giving a go............
