Maps from Memory
Recommend on Google+
This is an all time classic of an activity that is fun, engaging and develops thinking skills.
The teacher splits the class into groups of 4 or 5 pupils. The aim of the activity is for the each group to work together to memorise and reproduce a diagram, chart, map or process. The diagram can be placed on the teachers desk or could even be on the wall outside the classroom. Each pupil is given a number, say 1 - 5. The teacher then calls out all the number ones.
They must then visit the diagram etc for around 30 seconds. They are not allowed to take notes and be careful of any mobile phones! They then return to the group and try to reproduce what they have seen on A3 paper. After about 20 seconds the number two’s go up etc etc. The aim of the activity is to reproduce the diagram, map etc as quickly and as accurately as possible.
After the activity is complete, it is worth getting the students to reflect on how the completed the task and how they organised themselves.
This activity has endless possibilities and could be used in the following subjects:
Business Studies: After initial teaching of the balance sheet students could complete a maps from memory exercise of the balance sheet structure (Ive done this myself)
Geography: Students could be asked to reproduce the water cycle (Ive done this as well!)
Science: Stages in an experiment
RE: A religious image or painting
Maths: A graph
Overall, a brilliant kinesthetic activity that gets students working together…..
Why not give it a go..............
