This activity is great as a starter or plenary for any subject. It’s a fun way to start or finish a lesson in a short period of time, whilst gaining a good idea of how much the pupils have understood about a topic. The best type of bell for this activity is a “check-in” bell. I bought mine from Beamish Museum, however they’re fairly cheap to pick up from the internet.

If you are using this as a plenary, get your students to line up next to the door and place the bell on a desk close by. As each student goes to leave, fire a short-answer question at them related to the topic they’ve just learned about.

If they get it right, they are allowed the honour of whacking the bell and declaring themself “checked out” of your lesson. If you’re feeling a little crazy, you can take on the persona of a hotel receptionist with a fake check-out book in front of you. For extra spice, send pupils who get wrong answers to the back of the line!

As a starter, this activity can be used to re-cap previous lessons, or even just to ask the pupils what they know already about a topic. It’s always fun/cringe to emphasise the fact that they have now “checked in to the learning hotel”.

All you need is a bell, and a few questions prepared, so why not Give it a go?
