Key term revision TABOO

A board game adaptation I’ve used to good effect in the past is Taboo. It works really well for quick revision of key terms as a starter or plenary activity.
For those of you unfamiliar with the basic idea of Taboo, you have to get your team to guess a word from your description. You have one minute to get as many correct as possible. The challenge comes from the list of five ‘taboo’ words which you are not allowed to use in your description. Uttering one of these words results in getting “honked” by an opposing team member and you lose a point. I have found that it is a good way of ensuring understanding as the pupils will have to think of new ways of explaining a term.
This is an example of a card I created for my AS Economics:

To begin with, I have created cards for the class based on a particular topic. This can take a little while but I have found that after having done it a couple of times, they get the idea. Once they have picked up the concept, you can get them to create the cards for the game. This adds a nice element of competition as they try to make them as difficult as possible for the other team. It also gets them thinking about the words they would use in a description of a term so that these words are added to the ‘Taboo’ list.
