This is an excellent activity that is ideal as a starter, plenary or even a main body. The concept is extremely simple but highly effective.

The activity basically involves giving students a page of written text about the topic just covered (if used as a plenary or starter for the lesson after) which contains a number of mistakes. Students work individually or in pairs to try and spot the mistakes.

This activity is also excellent for differentiation, as the errors can range from the obvious to ones that are a matter of opinion allowing further discussion to take place. I have even given out a sheet with not one single error on it, however, because the students are expecting to find mistakes, they concentrate whilst they are reading thus consolidating their learning.

So, how could this be used in practice?

In Mathematics, students could be provided with some questions and answers. They need to work through them all to identify which (if any) contain mistakes.

In English, there could be a number of grammatical errors which students need to find and correct.

In Geography, Year 7 students could be given a sheet with information relating to depressions and anticyclones which contains a number of mistakes. For example, a feature of an anticyclone is fine settled weather, light winds and low pressure (low pressure being the mistake) etc etc
.
This activity really is applicable for any subject.

A word of warning about this activity however. A review is vital otherwise some students may take the ‘errors’ to be fact.

This activity is excellent for dry topics and although a little preparation is essential, once you have a bank of beat the teachers you’re at the races…........

Why not Give this a Go….........
