Today saw the release of the latest unemployment figures. Unemployment rose to 2.261 million in the three months to April this year, an increase of 232,000. The unemployment rate rose from 7.1% to 7.2%. This is a much smaller increase than had been expected, further fueling the green shoots argument.
As I read through my local newspaper this afternoon, I came across this interesting article. Unemployment in Gloucestershire has in fact fallen. One reason for this is the new recently opened Gloucester Quays outlet, which has created approximately 1,500 jobs. I am sure there are other areas of the country which have seen similar falls in unemployment.
This article in the Times links in quite nicely, giving regional unemployment figures.
