Experimenting with Forums
One of my aims this term is to experiment with the use of forums as a way of encouraging students to write about economics and reflect on what they have read, seen, heard or discussed. It is still early days, but the Moodle VLE offers several different types of forums each of which can be used in a variety of ways.

Take off for the VLE!
We now have over 2,000 students enrolled onto the AS and A2 economics VLE and I seem to have spent a lot of time poring over spreadsheets and (hopefully) aligning students into their various teaching groups. Colleagues are starting to Moodle about and it will be fun to see how this develops as a learning resource over the year - experimentation is the name of the game, I too am on a steep learning curve so apologies if I lose track occasionally! I am very interested to hear from colleagues who have tried Mahara - details are available here. Details of the next iMoot are also starting to emerge - here is the link.

The second video looks at the wider side effects of developing an open source VLE.
How Moodle can change a school (1)
A superb presentation - from a school using Moodle to deliver business and economics education. Inspirational stuff for those of us who are becoming Moodlers!

I am spending some time this weekend improving our Moodle VLE courses for AS and A2 Economics - the response from schools and colleges to come on board and develop a collaborative course has been tremendous and there will be over thirty different schools, a hundred or more teachers and well over a thousand students having access when school starts in a few days.
Here is a super post from Miguel Guhlin, who recently re-posted a collection of 10 “Moodle instructional use scenarios” which is basically 10 ways that you might successfully use Moodle in the classroom.
The Scale of Moodle
Our Moodle VLE continues to develop and several schools and colleges have signed up for the forthcoming academic year. It is interesting to track the official statistics for Moodle, based on registration details held with the Moodle website. Accessing this today I found the following:

Building an interactive VLE
I am finishing off my presentation for teachers in Belfast this coming Monday and already looking forward with great anticipation to heading over there again. Many thanks to the many colleagues who submitted their thoughts on using a VLE in economics and business teaching. I will be streaming the presentation on Tuesday and also using some of the contributions in my presentation at the British Library on Thursday.
