Miners made redundant from Maltby Colliery in Yorkshire many of whom with decades of experience faced years on the unemployment register when the mine closed earlier in 2013. But some have been thrown a lifeline with the rising demand for miners in the UK potash industry.
This BBC news report follows the miners as they adjust to a new working life one mile underground but five miles out to sea.
It is a good example of the importance of occupational mobility for
people facing the challenge of finding new work when economic
circumstances change. More new jobs may follow if the York Potash project is completed. However there is opposition to the plans from tourism-related stakeholders. More here
