Timetric: Trade Balance in Manufactured Goods

The long term widening of the trade deficit in manufactured goods is demonstrated in this chart from Timetric. The data can prompt a discussion about the short term and medium term causes of this structural trade deficit. In the second chart below we track the value of exports and imports of manufactures on a monthly basis to show that the overall value of trade has grow significantly over the years even though the trade gap has widened.
