Many thanks to Stephen Grant for letting us have details of an opportunity to teach in a thriving Economics & Business department in a quite simply stunning part of the country - Canford School. Applications need to be in by 1 February 2012, so move quickly!
ECONOMICS AND BUSINESS STUDIES
Canford School (Full Time)
We are looking to appoint a teacher of Economics and Business Studies, to start in September 2012. This post would ideally suit a teacher looking for his or her first or second post, though for the right candidate this need not be a fixed requirement. Canford is a boarding school, and it is important for all teachers to play a full role in the lives of pupils both inside and outside the classroom.
The Economics and Business Studies departments are large and well-established with sixth form numbers for September projected to be approximately 45 Economics and 35 Business Studies students. There is a strong record of good grades and Oxbridge entrance. There are currently 9 sixth form sets, 5 in Economics and 4 in Business Studies, following the AQA and OCR specifications respectively. Recent A level results have seen 85-95% AB in Economics and 80% AB in Business Studies. There has been a 100% A-C grade pass rate in both departments for several years. The newly introduced GCSE Business Studies course follows the OCR specification and has around 40 candidates in its first year divided into three sets. The appointee will be required to support these departments at all year groups. There may also be an opportunity to contribute to the General Studies programme, called Connections, taught throughout the school.
We aim to enthuse and encourage an active and discursive interest in the subjects, communicating the relevance and significance of Economics and Business Studies in a broad sense but with the intellectual depth to ensure that the students are challenged and stretched in their understanding of the issues. Oxbridge classes of three to five students give an opportunity for deeper analysis and there has been a steady stream of successes in PPE, Economics and Management and Land Economy. The department currently has an overall staff of four who, alongside traditional methods, are increasingly using IT based delivery systems for teaching material.
Canford is a very successful co-educational boarding and day school with 630 pupils aged 13 - 18, of whom about a third are day pupils. It has one of the most beautiful settings of any school in the country, and is a very enjoyable and exciting atmosphere in which to work. The pastoral side of the school is very strong and applicants should be willing to play a full part in the extra-curricular life of the school
Applicants are welcome to contact the Heads of Department, Stephen Grant, Economics (sdg@canford.com) or Claire Kilpatrick, Business Studies (cek@canford.com), for further information.
Candidates should apply by letter (or email) and include a full curriculum vitae, the names and addresses of two referees and completed application form. Address for applications: The Headmaster’s Secretary,
Canford School, Wimborne, Dorset BH21 3AD. Email: pc@canford.com. Telephone: 01202 847434. The closing date for applications is 4pm Wednesday 1st February 2012 with interviews taking place week commencing Monday 6th February.
