The final shortlisted entrants for the 2008 Royal Economic Society Young Economist of the Year 2008 were announced this evening.

The panel of judges met overnight for a team supper on Wednesday before convening early today for a full day of marking and deliberation. Each of the near four hundred entries was read through during the morning session and in most cases, each essay was reviewed by at least two people.

As predicted, a sizeable number of the essays focused on environmental issues, but in the end, a very broad range of topics found their way through the judging process. By mid afternoon the judges were engaged in detailed scrutiny of thirty essays that had reached the highly commended stage and decisions thereafter on the final shortlist were very difficult.

Congratulations to the following students who have had their essays selected for final judging. (Details of their essay topics are included)
