During a week when an NHS government body has been criticised for its “Pay People to Lose Weight” scheme, here’s an interesting auction on ebay last night, that illustrates how incentives could be structured better. The person is selling “his right to gain weight”. This is very much along the lines that Thaler and Sunstein describe in their great book, Nudge - the idea that if you can make a binding commitment (in their examples to save more, or to lose weight), you can align incentives to achieve a socially (or individually) superior outcome.
