RES Essay Competition: Does Aid Hinder Development?

The 3rd essay in the RES essay competition list of titles is short and to the point: “Foreign aid hinders development. Discuss.”. It is likely to be popular for students who take an active interest in development economics and has a special resonance at the moment as we judge the impact of the global financial and economic crisis on many of the world’s lowest income countries.

As with previous emails on other essays in the RES competition for 2010, we are hoping for some really interesting and perceptive answers on this question. The best approach is not to write it as a standard AS or A2 level exam essay, we look for students to take a few more risks and not be constrained by the needs of exam mark schemes. Impressive answers will be strong on supporting evidence to help build and sustain an argument. They will discuss different types of aid and look at the experiences of a range of countries. This will be an essay where the quality of research could well make a big difference - remember to add a clear bibliography to your answer and show genuine independent learning skills by considering arguments from across the wide divide on this issue.
