Why on earth should Lady Gaga and baby food appear in an economics blog?

Well, it’s all to do with shifts in the demand curve. Lady Gaga is allegedly enjoying a “goo diet” in order to maintain her weight. Essentially the singer has one main meal a day and then snacks on jars of baby food to curb hunger. Whilst this is certainly not recommended, and nutritionists say you should always diet by healthy eating and exercise, the impact on sales of baby food has been incredible. According to Ocado, a grocery website, orders for Heinz Mum’s Own Creamed Porridge have increased by 100%, and jars of pasta and spaghetti bolognese purees are up 87%!

So, if your looking for an example for the “F” of your “FACES” acronym to explain shifts in the demand curve then this is as good as any!
