Session 1: Prospects and Policy Challenges for the UK Economy
This is a comprehensive overview session on key recent developments in the UK economy with a special focus on the macro and micro policy challenges facing the UK at a crucial stage of the economic cycle. The aim of this session is to extend and enrich student awareness of what is happening in the UK and to put this in the context of wider pan-European and Global changes and shifts. It is designed to lead into session 2 (on the Euro Zone crisis) and session 3 (on globalisation).
Session 2: The Euro Zone in Crisis
- The Euro Zone growth and debt crisis
- Labour markets in the single currency area - the unemployment crisis
- Policies to improve growth and competitiveness in the European union economy
Session 3: Globalisation under Pressure
- The changing nature of globalisation / shifts in global trade and investment
- Challenges to globalisation - shocks, inequality, imbalances and protectionism
- Globalisation and the UK economy
Session 4: Constraints on Growth and Development
- Primary export dependency and the natural resource curse
- Challenges of the middle-income trap
- Conflict and corruption
- Inequality and development
- Other constraints
Session 5:
- Special session on exam techniques
- Writing great essays
- Handling data questions with confidence
