New articles just added to econoMAX:

Marshalling Economics (Mark Seccombe, Queen’s Gate School)

As you prepare for school in the morning – cursing Economics and the textbook you have to drag with you, it might be worth taking a moment to think about who is to blame for the amount of theory it contains. It’s not the author, nor is it Adam Smith and his Classical colleagues, nor even the current hot theorists of economics: Keynes and Hayak.

RWC Multiplied! (Mark Johnston, King’s College, Auckland)

As the 2011 Rugby World Cup (RWC) gets underway there has been huge excitement and expectation amongst the New Zealand population. With home advantage the All Blacks are firm favourites but too often the team has failed to live-up to expectations in the premier rugby event.

Revenues down at East Midlands Airport (Andy Reeve, The Grange School)

East Midlands Airport is located in a triangle formed by the cities of Derby, Leicester and Nottingham. It is owned by the Manchester Airport Group, having been previously owned by National Express.

Austerity or Quantitative Easing (Mark Johnston,King’s College, Auckland)

Recently The Economic Focus column in The Economist had an article that discussed how successful austerity is in generating growth in an economy. Barack Obama said “We have to cut spending we can’t afford so to put the economy on sounder footing and to give our businesses the confidence they need to grow and create jobs”.

Food Inflation – the rush to budget foods (Andy Reeve, The Grange School)

The official level of inflation, the Consumer Price Index (CPI) rose to 4.4% in July, up from 4.2% in June. Although the main pressures were from the category called “Miscellaneous goods and services”, although some food stuffs such as fish, fruit and soft drinks did see their prices easing. However, bread and cereals continue to increase in price with a further 1.5% increase between June and July 2011.

Why are so few houses being built? (Geoff Riley, Eton College)

We build on less than per cent of the United Kingdom’s land area and yet a perception remains that Britain is a crowded island with precious spare land left to construct hundreds of thousands of new homes. And we certainly need many more new homes! The UK population is set to grow to around 67.5m by 2020.

Eurozone crisis? Temporary or permanent? (Liz Veal)

It is rare to read anything these days about the Eurozone without the word ‘crisis’ being added. And for once, the press is probably accurate in its assessment. The Euro was born in 1999, when many of the EU countries adopted the single European currency as their own. The UK refused to sign up and many anti-Europeans have been able to feel smug as the cracks in the Eurozone economies have exploded since the credit crunch, though the UK is, by no means, immune to the economic problems that a collapse of the Eurozone would cause, with a substantial proportion of the UK’s exports heading to euro countries
