Conference Line Up
There is an exam season to get through yet, but I am already looking forward to the annual conference for Economics teachers to be held at the superb British Library conference centre on Friday 27th June. The main aim of the day is to enjoy some presentations and discussions from a panel of high quality speakers, all of whom have a notable reputation in their own field. The 2008 Conference promises to be one of our best ever.
John Micklethwait the editor of the Economist will open proceedings. I heard him speak in February and he gave an unrivaled overview of the economic and geo-political forces driving markets and governments at this critical stage of the financial and political cycle. After coffee we have a delightful double-header. Tim Harford, best-selling author, BBC radio and television presenter and leader writer for the Financial Times will be speaking about some of the themes in his new book The Logic of Life. Tim is followed by Harriet Lamb, who has been CEO of the Fair Trade Foundation since 2001 and who has lead this organisation during a period of unprecedented growth of interest in and demand for fair trade products. We have penciled in plenty of time for lively question and answer from the floor of the auditorium.
After lunch (provided as always by Leith’s) we focus on macroeconomics with the help of two of the city’s top economists - Karen Ward from HSBC and Gerard Lyons from Standard Chartered. There will be no shortage of issues to discuss, where will the price of oil be by the time the delegate assemble?
Further details of the conference and the online booking option can be found here. We will have delegates flying in from many different corners of the continent; I am once again looking forward to meeting lots of passionate teaching economists!
