The view from the other side of the desk

Wednesday, June 19, 2013

I've been teaching Business for some years now. But I don't have any qualifications in the subject (my background is Economics). So this year, I thought it'd be fun to take my Business A-level. I'm getting sponsored within school on a per-mark basis with the proceeds going to a project the school is linked with in Ghana, but besides that worthy cause it's been a real eye-opener to be there in the thick of it with the students. With one exam to go, tomorrow, I thought I'd put up some thoughts on how its gone so far...

Organisational Culture Change - Is New Leadership Required?

A key issue for students looking at the challenge of changing organisational culture is whether new leadership is required? Can the change be achieved without someone new at the top?

Let's look at a sample essay case study to see how some potential essay points might be identified.

BUSS4 Exam Technique - The Basics of PEEL

In our exam preparation workshops, we coach students to develop their essay writing technique by using a series of approaches which help students write relevant answers to the required depth of application, analysis and evaluation.

A core part of that approach is the PEEL technique for writing powerful paragraph points. PEEL is a particularly powerful approach because it allows students to reach the highest levels of application (good application) and analysis (good analysis) in just one well-developed and argued paragraph point.

Here's a key-point summary of the PEEL method.

How are UK firms raising finance?

Tuesday, June 18, 2013

The textbook section on finance is sometimes a bit far from the mark when describing how firms (especially the biggest) raise finance in reality.  Several years have passed since the ‘Credit Crunch’ of 2007/08 and big problems remain. Business lending has now been falling steadily for four years, and is 20% lower than in 2009.

BUSS4 Section B - Prepare for Hybrid Essay Questions

Sunday, June 16, 2013

I’ve been taking a close look through our AQA BUSS4 Topic Tracker to get a feel for how the Section B essay titles have been selected and structured in recent papers (and since the current spec was introduced). There is a clear progression in the style of the Section B essays and I suspect this has important implications for students refining their exam technique. I’ve jotted down a few thoughts about this below.

BUSS4 - 10 Section A Essay Questions on Organisational Culture to Practice

Saturday, June 15, 2013

In the final days before the BUSS4 exam, part of your revision should include looking at some exam-style essay questions spending 5-10 minutes planning a relevant answer.  A key technique in BUSS4 is being able to focus on a small number of relevant points which directly answer the essay question. You can only do this if you really understand what the question is answering!

So here are 10 exam-style essay titles for BUSS4 Section A on the research theme - Organisational Culture.

Have a go at planning the paragraph points you might make to answer them - and also which examples/evidence you might bring in.  Remember to plan each point using our PEEL approach

And don't forget to use our Stepping Stones approach to think about how you would develop each of your chosen points. You don't have to write the entire paragraph point - just think about that logical chain of argument.

Finally, have a think (or look at your notes) to identify which examples and evidence you could bring in to help support the argument in each paragraph point. If you can't think of 2-3 relevant examples to use, then you need to top up your research (have a look through the many blog entries on our Section A Blog)

Anyway...here are the 10 Section A questions to try:

Market segmentation - a challenge to find new examples

Thursday, June 13, 2013

When students start work and marketing I encourage them to come up with a product or service that appeals to 'everyone'.  So far they have never come up with an example that really satisfies me.  It seems that almost every product that is sold is tailored, in some way, to the needs of its target audience.  That concept lies behind the idea of market segments, or groups of consumers who share the same buying habits.

If you enjoyed Jim's reference to the hilarious Bic biro for women (!) then you'll like my new favourite.  And that's the point of my new market segment challenge!

BUSS4: Don’t be a Story-teller – Be an Expert Pundit

Tuesday, June 11, 2013

Ronnie Corbett is a superb story-teller.  Once he begins, you can sit back, relax and allow the story to unwind, step by step.  His stories ramble on and on…and on. Each story is filled with superfluous details, with Corbett easily side-tracked by related memories and very slowly getting to the point. Eventually you get to the punch line, but it’s the journey or story that mattered.

Corbett’s method of story-telling neatly sums up the approach taken by too many BUSS4 students in their use of evidence and examples in their essays.

Ethics & Competition: Chocolate Price Fixing in Canada

Thursday, June 06, 2013

This simply couldn't be worse news for two multinational giants in the global chocolate product market. Authorities in Canada have charged the food giants Nestle and Mars, together with a network of independent wholesale distributors, in an alleged conspiracy to fix prices of chocolates. Hershey is also involved - but they appear to have confessed to the illegal price-fixing activities and will be hoping for relatively lenient treatment in return for cooperating with the Canadian authorities.

Price-fixing is illegal - plain and simple. But it's also unethical. To be caught out price-fixing is to be caught acting against the interests of consumers. Not a good place to be if you are a global brand that values its reputation.

Nestle and Mars have both denied the alleged behaviour and have vowed to fight the legal action:

Nestlé said in a statement:

“Nestlé Canada will vigorously defend these charges. At Nestlé Canada, we pride ourselves on operating with the highest ethical business standards.”

Mars issued a similar promise to fight the allegations.

Time will tell whether price fixing has actually taken place.

But what is price-fixing?

BUSS4 in 6 Concepts/Theories: Analysing your Research Organisations

A good visual way of analysing your BUSS4 research organisations for both Section A and B is to relate them to different concepts or models. (apologies for the drawings in the picture above)  To go even further could be to link elements of some of these models and concepts together which can give a more in-depth, holistic view of the organisations in relation to some key BUSS4 topics.  I have started to get my students to relate them to the following 6:

BUSS4 - The Section B Essay Questions So Far

We've had quite a few BUSS4 exam papers now and it is always interesting looking back over the choice of essay titles for Section B to get a feel for the style and focus of what is on offer! It is also interesting to note which topics have been covered by the essay options in Section B!

Over the lifetime of the specification, you would hope that all the major topics in BUSS4 would feature in some way. After the January 2013 paper, there are still five core topics that have not yet been included in one of the three Section B essays, namely:

  • Mission, Aims & Objectives (although these could have been addressed relevantly by candidates in many of the Section B essays)
  • CSR & Sustainability (a Section A research theme in 2011)
  • Retrenchment (one of my favourites and touched on briefly in the Section A research theme in 2010 on strategies in a recession)
  • Takeovers and mergers (Section A research theme for 2012)
  • Contingency planning (linked to risk management and strategic decision-making)
  • European business (the forgotten child of BUSS4?)

Discussing corporate tax avoidance

This is quite a tough topic, and one that I'm sure you're aware of.  It's a fact that companies pay a smaller slice of the overall tax take in most countries than they did decades ago (see chart).  That's partly because taxes on business have been reduced.

But the debate is really about whether firms are paying their fair share.  It's also about the lengths companies like Apple, Amazon, Starbucks, Google or IKEA go to in order to minimise the amount of tax they pay.  Most people appreciate that these firms are clever enough to operate within the letter of the law, but is their behaviour ethical?  And how do they do it?!

Strategic Choice: Apple: Differentiation v Scale

A fascinating, short interview here with Tim Cook, CEO of Apple.

Cook compares Apple's performance to its competitors, and explains his product strategy in an onstage interview.

His argument is clear. Apple's strategy is one of differentiation, not cost leadership based on market-leading scale. For Apple, it is not about making the most of each of the product categories in which it has a presence - it is about making the best in the market.

So, Samsung is now the clear global market leader in mobile phones (including the fast-growing smartphone segment). But Cook argues that Apple makes the best phone. Compare the iPhone 5 with the Samsung Galaxy S4 - is he right?

For students, an important question to consider is this - what the key advantages that a successful strategy of product differentiation can bring? And can it be sustained against the intensive competition that Apple is facing from the likes of Samsung, Google and Huawei?

The Ethics Bank

Sunday, May 26, 2013

The Co-Op has keen to highlight their ethical credentials as a key part of its marketing and positioning strategies. Supporters claimed that its mutuality was a more desirable form of ownership than PLCs.

The Banking Division has run into difficulties, and there have been significant changes in personnel within the last few weeks, in part as a response to major financial problems. On Friday there were reports that it had stopped offering loans to new business customers, and today The Independent on Sunday reported that The Co-Op Group's Finance Director Steve Humes had resigned. This followed the recent resignation of Brian Tootell  after Moody's downgraded the Bank's bonds.

Mr Humes The Group Finance Director for the last two years, had been involved in managing the Co-Ops food operations, and may have had insufficient experience of its banking operations. Euan Sutherland the Co-Op's new CEO who was appointed in May, could be about to make significant changes in other key management positions.

The decision to stop lending to new business customer may imply that the there may be insufficient capital to support current obligations let alone new loans. The ethical bank may be about to meet its most serious crisis.

Saturday, May 25, 2013

Your core values underpin the way in which you behave, act, and how you live your life. So, if someone asked you to list your two most important values, what would they be?

I ask the question because the concept of core values is essential to understanding organisational culture.

Indeed I would hope that the role of core values would feature in many high-scoring BUSS4 essays for students answering questions about organisational culture – they are important!

Organisational Culture: Toxic Culture and Business Performance

Friday, May 24, 2013

It is relatively easy to identify evidence on how organisational culture can be an intangible asset of a business - a source of competitive advantage and a key reason for a business enjoying industry-beating financial performance.

However, the reverse can also be true. If organisational culture is managed incorrectly or (worse) left un-managed, it can become dysfunctional or toxic. In these situations the organisational culture of a business can become a liability, not an asset.  It can even lead to the failure of the business.

Students - in order to participate (i.e. ask a question; comment on discussion threads) you will need to be logged in using your Facebook or Twitter account when the online revision clinic goes live at 9.00 p.m. on Wednesday 22 May 2013 - here on this blog entry.

Please note:

  • We cannot guarantee to answer all questions submitted
  • Only submit one question at a time: multiple submissions of the same question will lead to you being blocked!
  • Check whether the question you want to ask has already been answered - particularly if you join us mid-way during the clinic
  • A full transcript of the clinic will be available on this blog URL as soon as the clinic has ended
