Many thanks to Janis Thompson at Bristol GS for suggesting this terrific 3-minute video on the battle between supermarkets and their hard-pressed suppliers. A great range of business topics in here, including an obvious starting point for discussing the ethical issues raised in the clip

I used this yesterday with my Year 13’s..ties in nice with economies of scale (not the blog by the way, only just seen this)…
My brother is a seniro electrical engineer and a few years ago worked for a multi-national frozen food manufacturer...they received an e-mail from one of the big four advising them that they wanted a further reduction in price..to achieve this...they organised 24 hour production..this helped spread the fixed costs out and lower unit costs..they also had to contact their suppliers..they cut costs so low that the most expensive part of the frozen food product was the box...the pressure of meeting these deadlines etc was to much (my brother was in charge of electrical maintenance on the machine) and he left....might be worth using this to build on the students knowledge and bring in an ethical debate..
