Watch the BBC article and video link with the head of Sony’s console division.

He says that the machine will overhaul rivals Nintendo and Microsoft within its 10-year lifecycle and that PlayStation 3 sales have already outstripped those of Microsoft Xbox 360 in Europe, though it lags behind in North America.  Nintendo’s Wii console is the number one machine globally.  Nintendo had shipped more than 25 million Wiis worldwide by April this year, while Microsoft reported 19 million 360s shipped by the same period.  Mr Hirai added Sony was engaged in a “marathon” race with Nintendo and Microsoft.  They have sold 10.5m Playstation 3s.

Both Sony and Nintendo had problems supplying their latest products when they were launched.  But Sony estimate consoles have a ten year lifespan, so it’s early days in determining a ‘winner’ amongst the various formats.  At some point in the near future, the logic of the product lifecycle suggests that Sony will need to be planning the launch of the Playstation 4……

Although the PS3 is far more advanced than the 360. I feel that due to the release date being put back again and again consumers simply went out and brought a 360 instead (i know i did) - but i was far more willing to sell my console in exchange for the PS3. The problem sony currently have is that people have already purchased a 360 console and are less willing to sell it to go towards a PS3. Also as both consoles are pretty expensive (although 360 has come down to £160) the target audience that these companies have are students 18 - late 20’s and so can’t really afford to buy two consoles.

I think sony should have realized this as a consequence of their actions of changing the release date.

Hopefully in the next few years consumers will have the disposable income to purchase the PS3 console. As more Christmas’s go buy parents will be buying PS3’s as their son/daughter already has a wii or 360.

true...but for many the exclusivity of the 360 games is what brings them in....the ps3 isnt that much better graphically u get me?

I have had both, the 360 and the PS3,

the execlusivity of games i think is running out.. we just got haze :D

umm graphics why, i think at the moment yes they are about the same but keep in mind the playstation 3 isn’t using even half of its graphics power compared to the 360 using up a larger amount of its resources…

When it comes to new and future released games using up more of the PS3 power.. we’ll see who comes crawling back…

may be expensive now, but it’s a long-term investment unlike the 360..
