New profiles of Britain’s top young entrepreneurs

The Daily Telegraph is running an interesting series of articles that profile the 40 richest young entrepreneurs in the UK.
The Telegraph define “young” as being under 40 (which rules me out…just
). As a result, their analysis includes many entrepreneurs who have founded and sold several businesses in their business career todate (which could be up to 20+ years).
In terms of trends, the Telegraph points to:
First, the overall wealth of the 40 entrepreneurs is markedly less than in earlier years. The Top Ten have wealth of £2.04bn, down from £2.58bn in 2006 and the £3.36bn the top 10 had in 2005. The decline shows just how hard it is to amass personal wealth of £50m or more before the age of 40.
Secondly, this year’s list is notable for the fact that Asian entrepreneurs make up a quarter of it. This is by no means a radical change from earlier lists but it nonetheless illustrates a growing trend.
And thirdly, the list indicates the growing importance of the “new economy” in the UK, with 11 of the list having made their fortunes from the computer industry. This reflects the changes in the overall UK economy.
The list would make a useful starting point for some student research and activities.
One approach would be to ask students to group the entrepreneurs into categories - e.g. those operating in the secondary or tertiary sector; or old-economy v new economy.
Another approach would be to allocate students to a specific entrepreneur and ask them to produce a brief report on their business - size, activities, marketing methods etc.
There are some cracking business examples in the list, but by definition it misses many more exciting businesses out ![]()
