McDonalds to diversify into…weddings

I’m not sure there is a box for this in the Ansoff Matrix.  Well I suppose it might be classified as product development (a new product to existing customers) rather than pure diversification, though the sceptical might suggest that this move by McDonalds actually belongs in the “bonkers box”?

The Independent reports that McDonalds in Hong Kong are to offer “on-site wedding ceremonies with menu option meals complete with your choice of a wedding cake, made of apple pie or even burgers”.  The customer base is the same - loyal (perhaps fanatical?) McDonalds fans.  So perhaps it is a logical move.  I’m sure the service, if it takes off, will be provided to a high quality standard.

Other potential upsides for wedding guests at McDonalds might include:

- Plenty of merchandise toys for the younger wedding guests to play with
- The chance to include lots of strangers who wander into the ceremony or meal
