Maltesers and Motivation
Recommend on Google+
Today, I had 23 PGCE students from the University of Sunderland over for a few hours of interactive teaching and learning activities in my classroom. They were brilliant. Got right into it they did.
Anyway, whilst they were there I remembered this really cool way of introducing Herzberg to the students.
Go round the classroom and give each student a couple of maltesers. Put them on the desk, tell them its a treat. Then, tell them that you have changed your mind. They can’t have them. Taking them back you are. See the disappointment on their faces.
Bingo. Dissatisfaction in the classroom..“That’s shocking that Sir…your a disgrace”
You can then use this example to illustrate hygiene factors in a round about way. By removing the sweets you are creating demotivation.
Indeed, Herzberg said that once a reward is given it becomes a right.
(I did give them back after. I’m not that harsh)
Enjoy…......
