Try a strange idea for a homework task ....

Miss - Can we have some homework please?  It’s strange but true – my students WANT to do homework.  No, they are not some type of ‘Stepford Student’ but it because I tell them to watch television for their homework.

There are many fantastic business related programmes at the moment it the most entertaining way to learn about real world business.  Some of my favourite include the classics of The Apprentice, Dragons Den (being repeated on a channel called Dave) and Working Lunch but there are many other excellent programmes out their amongst the vast array of channels.

The Hotel Inspector and Ramsey’s Kitchen Nightmares – great for ideas on picking up failing businesses

The Fabulous life of ……. – Great to use to understand ‘liquid asset’ values of today’s rich and famous

American Inventor – Like Dragons Den but with crazier ideas

There are also a number of great documentaries that sometimes look at business problems such as Dispatches, Panorama and the Tonight programme.  One of my favourites at the moment is Breaking into Tesco, which is fantastic for looking at the marketing mix.  Contestants have a product and they look at the 4 Ps surrounding their particular product and then pitch the idea to win a chance of being placed on Tesco shelves.

So next time you’re looking for a homework idea just tell the students they have to watch television!
