CSR - Corn: A Matter of Life or Death?

Should the USA continue to divert production of corn towards the production of biofuels rather than allow the corn to be used to feed the world’s population?  The view of the Chairman of Nestle is a definite NO!

An excellent CSR-related article here in the Independent explains the argument about the responsibilities of corn producers.  One leading businessman is not holding back when he comes to state his view.

Soaring food inflation is the result of “immoral” policies in the US which divert crops for use in the production of biofuels instead of food, according to Peter Brabeck-Letmathe, the chairman of Nestle. Brabeck-Letmathe has lashed out at the Obama administration for promoting the use of ethanol made from corn, at the expense of hundreds of millions of people struggling to afford everyday basics made from the crop.

“It is absolutely immoral to push hundreds of millions of people into hunger and into extreme poverty because of such a policy, so I think – I insist – no food for fuel.” is the telling quote.  But try persuading those American corn producers who are getting high prices for their crops from the biofuels producers.
