BUSS2 Workshop 2012 Programme Outline
The BUSS2 revision workshop for 2012 follows the successful format of our previous BUSS2 courses and picks up on the feedback from the official, public feedback by AQA examiners about student performance in recent sittings.
Once again we’re using a completely new set of case studies and exam-style exercises in each session to help students develop their understanding or core topics and also practice exam technique that is specifically designed to support improved attainment in May 2012.
The three key themes for the workshop are:
(i) What is competitiveness and how can the functions of a business work together to improve it?
(ii) How a business can improve its profitability (linking to (i))
(iii) How BUSS2 students can integrate numerical and written information from the BUSS2 exam case studies to help them reach the highest levels of the mark scheme.
The workshop is split into five sessions, each of which features exam technique advice. The techniques introduced and practised during the workshop will be most effective if they are reinforced by centres during follow-up lessons and revision sessions.
Session 1 – Marketing Mania
This session focuses on what we mean by effective marketing and how marketing can improve the competitiveness of a business. It examiners key concepts such as pricing and price elasticity of demand, promotion, the Boston Matrix and the product life cycle. We will also be analysing and evaluating ways in which a business can use extension strategies in order to make itself more competitive.
Session 2 – Funky Finance
The second session of the day will focus on finance. We’ll look at the differences between cash flow and profit and analyse ways that a firm can manage and improve its cash flow position. We will also be looking at ways in which businesses can improve their profitability.
Session 3 – Ops with Attitude
This session looks at how the operations function can contribute to the overall competitiveness of the business. We’ll focus on the key operational targets and evaluate which are the most important for different types of business, an area students find particularly challenging. We will also examine how the link between quality, customer service and competitiveness in the context of service businesses.
Session 4 – The Effective Workforce
Lots exam-style exercises straight after lunch (after a quick quiz) as we examine the link between an effective workforce and competitiveness. We’ll focus on understanding the causes and consequences of high labour turnover and poor labour productivity as well as methods of motivating employees and the implications of de-motivated staff.
Session 5 – Putting It All Together – the Competitive, Profitable Business
The final session draws together the key themes of the day. We’ll reinforce the BUSS2 exam skills developed during the day to consider the essential strategies a business can adopt to improve its overall competitiveness. We’ll look at the factors that BUSS2 students need to deal with in their exam answers to ensure that the competitiveness of the exam case study firms is addressed?
