Analysing the data - whatever happened to industrial action?

The data chart below shows the annual number of working days lost (to businesses) as a result of industrial action.  Using the chart as a stimulus material, answer the following questions:

(1) Define what is meant by industrial action

(2) The peaks in number of working days lost during recent decades were in 1978 and 1984.  Why was there such a significant upsurge in industrial action during those years?

(3) Describe the main features of the data chart in terms of overall trend in working days lost

(4) Outline three possible reasons for the trends you have identified in (3) above
