All set for the AQA Unit 5&6 Revision Workshop
The programme and materials for our AQA A2 Business Studies Units 5&6 Revision Workshops are now complete. It promises to be really useful and hopefully enjoyable day for over 1,500 A2 students. Here’s what we are covering on the day.
Taking a strategic approach (Bus 6)
This session focuses on encouraging students to think and write in the language of strategy. We look at what is meant by a “boardroom approach”. Materials include video interviews with Guy Hands (EMI) and Willie Walsh (BA).
Strategy and the economic environment (Bus 6)
After a quick quiz on the UK economy, we look at how the economic environment links with strategic decisions. We then take a look at two case study businesses (Asda & British Aerospace) and assess which which economic variables are most significant to them, and why? Finally, we use a recent video clip to assess how manufacturing businesses are handling the economic downturn.
Achieving success with good exam technique (Bus 6)
After some timed attempts at writing good, concise definitions, we move onto a method for rapidly analysing any Unit 6 case study business (the “SOCCER” approach) and apply this method to Whitbread plc. After students have had a chance to plan an answer to an exam-style question, we finish by looking at what makes a great Unit 6 answer.
Tackling tough topics (Bus 5&6)
Two areas of focus in this pre-lunch session.
First we tackle takeovers. Why do businesses use takeovers, how do they finance them and why do they fail? We look at four recent examples and work out the strategic reasons for each.
Secondly, we look at decision trees. After working through an exam-style example, we look at the advantages and disadvantages of decision trees in real life business decisions.
Writing winning essays (Bus 5)
After a popcorn & ice-cream-fuelled lunch (well, we are in a multiplex cinema) we look at what it takes to write great essays in Unit 5. Using a real-life video case study on ethical trading, we practice some great techniques for mark-busting essays.
Data busting for the Report (Bus 5)
Using a new Unit 5-style case study specially prepared for the workshop, we turn our attention to handling the appendix data in a Bus5 paper. Using the case study business, we attempt an exam-style question.
A2 Challenge
We wrap the workshop up with a couple of quickfire, fun A2 quizzes that recap on the key content of the day. Prizes galore and an energetic, relevant close to an intensive day.
