The Forehead Post it Note

Thursday, June 10, 2010

Its been a while…......

This is a cool activity that gets students talking the moment they walk through the door.

Before a lesson I put a key word on a post it note and as the students were walking through the door, stuck it on the forehead of a student (one that I know would engage with this activity)

The student then had to walk around the class asking the other students questions (to which they could only answer yes or no) to find out what the key word was.

A bit of fun to start the lesson with a splash of learning thrown in.

Now that can’t be bad…........

The Sense of a Goose

Wednesday, April 28, 2010

Clearing out my garage the other week, I came across one of my very first lesson plans. The lesson was on teamwork and leadership and it was for my first ‘formal’ observation by my University mentor.

Before I came into teaching, I worked for several years in retail management. At our monthly management meeting (several other store managers and the area manager) the area manager got us all to close our eyes, and he read (ever so slowly) a store entitled ‘the sense of a goose’. You can find it here. I still remember it to this day.

I used the sense of a goose in my observed lesson. Got the kids to close their eyes I did. Read it out real slow. Then got the students to discuss what it meant.

I used it as a starter today for my Year 13’s. The loved it. Especially closing their eyes.

I love this story, I hope you do too…...........

Build a Tower - Build a Team

Thursday, April 22, 2010

I haven’t come across this particular Marshmallow Challenge before (there is the standard one about eating as many as you can in 2 minutes or stuffing your mouth - diminishing returns?) But it could be a terrific exercises to use with Economics and Business students at any point during the school year! Here is a TED talk on some of the surprising results from around the world - and there are more details available here from this blog.

AQA A2 Business (BUSS3) - Influences on Functional Objectives

Tuesday, April 06, 2010

A key theme in BUSS3 is the influences (external and internal) that affect the setting and achievement of functional objectives.  For tutor2u’s AQA A2 BUSS3 INSET days last year we developed a new resource that encourages students to analyse and evaluate the potential implications of a variety of influences on some case study businesses.

Market Shares and Chocolate - a Cool IWB Resource

Wednesday, January 20, 2010

And then there were three…  Well, four if you include little Ferrero.  Now that Cadbury has been consumed by Kraft, there are loads of great resources out there to sustain business lessons over the next year or so.  And here is a cracker from the Guardian which would work a treat on the IWB.  An interactive guide to revenues and market share by confectionery group AND brand.  Some great potential here for IWB-based quizzes and for some follow-up calculations comparing and contrasting the revenues and market shares of particular brands.

Bottom Line - Keeping Overheads Low

Monday, December 28, 2009

30 seconds of business studies gold here - from the inspirational founder of specialist retailer JoJo Maman Bébé - Laura Tension.  Laura spoke at the tutor2u Business Teacher conference back in 2006 and she really is a tremendous role model for students.

The question is - what is the most important lesson she has learned in business.  Laura’s answer is simple - keep overheads low.

The clip would make a great starter or stimulus piece, and students could then consider some follow up questions.  E.g:
- Define what is meant by the term overhead
- Explain how overheads affect the breakeven position of a business
- Identify three major overheads that a retailer like Laura needs to control
- What are the potential disadvantages of trimming overheads to their minimum?
