A sneak peak at TBBLE 2011/12

Sunday, October 02, 2011

This is very naughty of me, but i just couldn’t resist looking inside the delegate pack for the first TBBLE of 2011 - at the Guoman Charing Cross, on Tuesday 4 October.

The format of this course is unlike any other CPD course you’ve ever attended.  Three presenters (on Tuesday, it’s tutor2u bloggers Michelle Stephenson, Innes Robinson and Lord Sutch) compete for the votes of the delegates. Their aim is simple - to introduce and demonstrate their best ideas for business lesson starters, plenaries and other teaching activities.  Teachers attending TBBLE take the whole package of resources, ready to use the very next day!

So what did I find when I opened one of the delegate packs sat here in the office ready to be despatched via tutor2u’s fastest (and strongest) carrier pigeons?

Here’s a sneak preview…(p.s. please don’t tell Michelle, Innes and his Lordship that I’ve done this)

Zondle Packages for GCSE

Tuesday, September 27, 2011

At the end of the last school year I really took to Zondle.  Its intuitive interface and fun games make it an easy win with students (I am working on the staff side having just uploaded the whole school into the system).

After seeing Geoff’s post on creating a package  I thought to myself, “Gareth, if you create a few of those a week in the summer hols, you’ll be in clover come September”.  Unfortunately some extreme decorating chez moi got in the way of my plans, but now I am back on the case.

Business Studies Teachers on Twitter (updated 15 September 2011)

Thursday, September 15, 2011

Many business studies teaching colleagues are making superb use of Twitter.  They source information, communicate directly with businesses and entrepreneurs, network with colleagues and in some cases communicate with students.  If you are not already on Twitter, I highly recommend you give it a try. The best way to see it in action is to set up (or use) your account and follow some of these excellent business teachers who are active on Twitter.  There are several active business & economics teaching threads on Twitter - perhaps the best hashtag to follow is #ecbusteach

Creating a Business Lesson Resource Package using Zondle

Thursday, September 01, 2011

One of the great features of the Zondle web site is that teachers can create a customised package of resources on a chosen topic. I played around with this today and put together a short package on the economics of coffee to get a feel of what is possible.

Business studies teachers looking for an easy-to-use site to create their own business quizzes and other activities should head to Zondle to have a look!  Here is a brief guide…

Strategy explained - Insights into Amazon

Friday, May 13, 2011

A quite brilliant deck of analytical slides here from Fabernovel which explain the business strategy of Amazon.com.  Lots of detail, of course, but within this presentation is a gold mine of strategic insights into all aspects of Amazon.  It would be interesting to simply give the link to your Year 13 students and ask them to highlight five key points or pieces of evidence that they can use to illustrate how a firm can be so successful online.

Strategic decision-making: hunch, science, tankers and speedboats

A fantastic discussion on BBCR4 Bottom Line last week (22 Feb) on the nature of decision-making in business.  The superb Stephanie Flanders was joined in the studio by Dominic Taylor, chief executive of payment services company PayPoint; Rita Clifton, chairman of branding consultancy Interbrand; Sir Michael Rake, chairman of BT Group. They talked about the role of intuition in making important decisions. Is there still room in modern business for the good old-fashioned hunch, or do decisions these days always need to be backed up by solid analysis?

My notes from the discussion are provided below.  The programme’s discussion is highly recommended for all advanced business students…

Dont make a hash of it! Using hash tags on Twitter

Tuesday, February 15, 2011

Lots of business teachers are tapping into the rich potential of Twitter for teaching and learning and one question often asked is “what are those strange hash tags at the end of so many of your tweets?” Hash tags use the hash symbol # followed by something else for example #tutor2u or #enterprise or #strategy

Why do they exist? Well, suppose that you’re interested in a particular topic in business or enterprise, or a topical event or perhaps a personality of interest, then adding a hash tag to your tweets will mean that others who use the same hash will be better able to see what is being discussed on that related hash tag within the twitter community.  There are no hard and fast rules about how hash tags are created. It all depends on the community of users and what they choose to use!

Great feedback on TBBLE 2010

Monday, October 18, 2010

We completed the second date for our new Business CPD course in Manchester on Friday. TBBLE (probable The Best Business Lesson Ever) was a brand new course where were tried to pack as many new business teaching ideas into one day.  Starters, main lesson activities, plenaries and more - all into one CPD day, with four presenters battling to win the best approval rating of the delegates!

It really was quite a different CPD event and it was a delight to see over 60 business teachers at each of the two days - in London and Manchester.  And we’ve had some lovely feedback about the day too.  For example…an email we received this morning:

“Please can you pass on my immense thanks to Jim, Graham, Mark and Michelle for a totaly brilliant training day on Friday in Manchester!  It was great to meet Lord Sutch in person after following his blog and using so many of his ideas for so long!  After a great lunch in probably the best hotel in Manchester (and I’ve stayed at the Lowry so judgement is valid!), there
was no snoozing with my eyes open for the afternoon session which is a first! The whole team is inspirational and IF ONLY, other subject areas had the same! The course was just the BEST COURSE EVER! Thanks, thanks and thanks again!”

Always nice to get such positive feedback!  I think we ought to start work now on TBBLE 2011!

Tracking the popularity of global brands on social networks

Tuesday, July 13, 2010

The growing influence of social networks is providing us with new insights and data in the popularity of brands.  I came across this fascinating real-time tracking site today which takes live feeds of the number of followers, fans or subscribers to the official Twitter, Facebook and YouTube sites of major brands.  The site then calculates a league table of brand popularity.  Interesting how Starbucks currently comes out top (at time of writing - 13 July 2010).

Here is the link.  Lots of other categories are shown too.
