NETWORK LICENCE - PHOTOCOPIABLE AND DIGITALLY COPIABLE RESOURCE Welcome to the 2008 edition of the European Economy in Focus. This companion is designed as a study support for students taking exams on the economics of the EU and in particular the Unit 4 exam for the AQA A2 Economics syllabus. The landscape of the EU is always evolving. I hope that this study companion will help you keep up to date with some of the key recent developments in important policy areas such as the single market, EU enlargement, reforms to farming and fishing, environmental problems, transport and regional inequalities. At the end of each section there is a selection of links for further reading and research. These links draw heavily on the superb output from the BBC news web site and from published sources such as the Guardian, the Telegraph, the Times and web sites run by official organisations, think tanks and pressure groups. The economics and politics of the EU are almost guaranteed to create many strong opinions and there are plenty of commentators and organisations committed to putting forward their own agenda. Although I have tried to write this companion in a neutral tone, the arguments contained in the text and the links I have provided cannot hope to cover all of the different viewpoints on any one single issue. Be on the look out for value judgements in the resources that you access during your study - this is a good skill to develop and you will gain good marks for evaluation in the exam if you can detect bias and selectivity in the stimulus materials provided in your exam paper! In preparation for the exam, it is a good idea to keep up to date with recent developments in the European Union as the economic landscape is changing all of the time, and the examiners will always reward up to date awareness that is relevant to the questions under discussion. Charts in this study companion have been produced using EcoWin and draw only on officially published data from sources such as Euro Stat, the OECD, the IMF and the Office of National Statistics (UK).
