Red Herring is a computer game which supports pupils studying French or German. The aim of the game is to solve a murder and players are required to:
- interview witnesses and suspects who speak French or German
- use vocabulary skills to uncover forensic evidence
- solve language puzzles to reveal the identity of the murderer
- complete special tasks to test knowledge of travel and Europe
Red Herring makes learning a modern language fun. Pupils interact with the different characters who live and work in the town and this helps to improve listening skills and comprehension. Problem solving activities help to reinforce and extend vocabulary.
Players adopt the role of a police detective investigating the murder of the local journalist Max Herring. Piece by piece, players will assemble clues to make up the murder-mystery jigsaw until the culprit is identified. Red Herring has an in-built translation facility so all pupils are able to enjoy the game regardless of their level of ability in French or German.
Red Herring also contains an 8-minute video highlighting the benefits of studying a modern foreign language.
